Our Veteran's Day Message of Gratitude and Support
The veterans we honor today came from all walks of life, but they shared several fundamental qualities. They possessed courage, pride, determination, selflessness, dedication to duty and integrity – all the qualities needed to serve a cause larger than one’s self.
Since the first shots at Lexington and Concord were fired and our Revolutionary War began, American men and women have been answering the nation’s call to duty. Millions of Americans have fought and died on battlefields here and abroad to defend our freedoms and way of life. Today our troops continue to make the ultimate sacrifices, and even as we lose troops, more Americans step forward to say, I’m ready to serve. They follow in the footsteps of generations of fine Americans. Today, people throughout the country will gather together to remember, to honor, and to pay gratitude to those who have served our country. From the soldiers who shivered and starved through the winter at Valley Forge to the doughboys crouched in the muddy trenches of France to the platoon who patrolled the hazy jungles of Vietnam and the young man or woman patrolling the mountains of Iraq and Afghanistan, join with United Soldiers and Sailors of America as we honor them all.
How can we possibly thank a veteran who put his or her life in direct danger to protect the freedom of millions of Americans whom they will never know? Our actions in supporting our veterans, especially those who now need our help, must speak louder than our words. In 2013, USASOA was established with the core mission to ensure that all veterans had the basics of life: food, shelter, heat, utilities, toiletries and more. With your support, and through the USASOA Wounded Defenders of Freedom Fund we have been serving our struggling ill, injured and wounded veterans and their families so that they may live a happy, healthy, and dignified life, a life that they truly deserve. Yes, it remains true that we have thousands of forgotten and marginalized veterans who exist in pain and hopelessness on the streets of our great and wealthy country. Veterans experience homelessness, suffer from PTS, commit suicide at a staggering rate, lack the proper and professional mental and physical health care they need and deserve many due to ‘bad-paper’ discharges related to service-related trauma, including sexual trauma. More women veterans are now homeless than men and exist at a higher percent of the total homeless population in America. It has been said that the true character of a nation, of its people is seen in how it treats its veterans. However, together, we can and will continue to work diligently to impact the quality of life for all veterans and their families. Through our veteran advocacy work on Capitol Hill in DC, to our grassroots programs and initiatives such as our BOOTS ON THE GROUND food collection drives, STORM THE STREETS campaign to locate homeless vets and give them a warm meal, clothing, and a ride to a shelter or to a local VA facility and OPERATION: REBOOT, our veteran, peer to peer counseling group – the goal of USASOA is to ensure that our veterans are treated as our greatest national treasures. Honor our veterans by taking action – join us today and show them the same commitment to improving their lives as they gave to us in defending ours. They gave us their self-less sacrifices, in return can we do any less and truly call ourselves grateful Americans?
